We know the industry

In 1918, chemist Fritz Haber and engineer Carl Bosch invented the Haber-Bosch process to synthesize ammonia on an industrial scale, used as the nitrogen source in agricultural fertilisers. Previously, the source for ammonia as a fertiliser was derived from natural sources such as manure. The ability to produce nitrogen-based fertilisers in large quantities meant greater agricultural yields. The process was a milestone for industrial chemistry and agriculture, and Haber and Bosch were awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

Chemicals have an impact on agriculture’s supply chain beyond fertilisers. Applications include pest control, packaging, polytunnels, greenhouses, and farm equipment and machinery. Agriculture is one of the largest users of petroleum-based products.
